The engine block is the heart of the engine because it is the most fundamental part of it. The engine block is the structure in which all the elements of the engine are located: cylinders, pistons and others.

The main function of the engine block is to house the most important parts of the engine. This piece contains the orifices for the cylinders and within it the pistons work to burn the fuel. One of the functions of the cylinder block is to supply the main line of oil to the most important parts of the engine.

What is the engine block made of

The two most used materials to manufacture the engine block are: cast iron or aluminum. The advantage of cast iron is that it has a resistance proportional to its volume, but it is heavier.

The manufacture of an engine block

The engine block is manufactured from a mold that is created from a mixture of zircon sand, glue and hardener. Zircon sand has a very high melting point, so it is ideal for this task. The sand mixture is injected into the master mold and solidified through a gas. The different molds are glued to each other using a glue capable of withstanding high temperatures. Once the entire mold is ready, all the material from which the engine will be made of is injected into it.

What are the parts of an engine block?

cylinders

Cylinders are the place where the pistons are located, which in turn generate the movement of the engine with the explosions. Cylinders can come in different sizes, but these are determined by the stroke or size of the piston.

Cooling channels

The passages of the block are the channels through which the water circulates. These channels are found around the cylinders and their design helps dissipate heat when in contact with the liquid, but helping to maintain the resistance of the walls.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft is located at the bottom of the engine block where the connecting rods are mounted.

Intake and exhaust valves are elements whose function is controlling a liquid or gas flow; those ones used in the intake and exhaust of a four-stroke engine are usually seat valves.

Valves are precision parts of the engine and have four very important tasks in motor operation:

  • Blocking sections of the flow.
  • Control of gas exchange.
  • Hermetic closing of the cylinders.
  • Dissipation of the heat that has been absorbed from combustion exhaust gases.

EXHAUST VALVES

The exhaust valve is in constant contact with exhaust gases that are at very high temperatures, so they must have a stronger structure than intake valves.

Type of valves:

  • Monometallic Valve
  • Bimetal Valve
  • Hollow valves

Some jobs report more wear and tear than others for our machine, specifically for the tracks and undercarriage of excavators, so it is important to have good practices that help us to respect the degradation of the undercarriage and the machine in general.

It is important to perform a full undercarriage inspection to spot excessive or uneven wear, as well as look for damaged or missing components. If the machine is used in difficult applications or other harsher weather conditions, the undercarriage may need to be inspected more often.

In addition, an improper cleaning of our excavator’s chain can increase fuel consumption and even put the integrity of the construction personnel at risk and our own.

With these tips, you can get better performance and life out of the undercarriage of your excavator.

  1. Always keep the undercarriage clean
  2. Check the undercarriage components daily
  3. Good practices means correct operation
  4. Proper track tensioning

The lighting system is essential within a heavy machinery equipment, both to increase safety, both one’s own and that of others, as well as to optimize working hours.

Some of the advantages of a good lighting system are the following:

– Equipping our machinery with the most suitable lighting systems will allow us to gain in safety. Not surprisingly, by being more and better lit we will be more visible to other road users. Thus, we can count on short and long range lights to illuminate the surroundings of our machine, its accessories and accesses.

– Carry out night works with greater safety, with high-quality LED headlights, we can extend the useful working hours of our machine in a safe way, good visibility of the environment where we work will help us to carry out our work more efficiently.

– Our visibility towards the rest of the machines or work personnel will be infinitely greater, in certain work environments where noise or dust can give us less visibility, a good lighting system will help us to carry out a preventive safety system, warning the rest of our presence.

– Comply with current regulations, currently the regulations that govern correct lighting at work warn about the need for a good quantity and quality of light for the development of daily activity, so that, with a good lighting system, we will be complying with any standard that this need requires of us.

At Blumaq we have a main commitment to quality and good service, this is why our agreement with ABL allows us to distribute the highest quality lighting systems on the market, in addition to having the largest stock and compatibility with a high range of the main brands of public works machinery on the market.

TECHNICAL TIPS – COOLING SYSTEMS /technical-tips-cooling-systems/ Mon, 21 Mar 2022 11:09:25 +0000 /?p=12436 The post TECHNICAL TIPS – COOLING SYSTEMS appeared first on EN- Moving the World.

]]>

Cooling system is in charge of reducing the temperature of the engine and other systems such as the braking or hydraulic system, it is also responsible for maintaining the engine at an adequate working temperature, for this purpose coolant is used.

Air was used in older engines, but these engines are no longer very common in modern industry.

These are some of the subsections of the cooling system;

  • Coolers and intercoolers
  • Water pumps
  • Tensioners and belts
  • Indicators and sensors
  • Expansion tanks
  • Organic and inorganic refrigerants
  • Miscellaneous (Hoses, plugs, gaskets, fan motors, etc…)

Cooling system operation

When the engine is cold, the components wear out easily, it pollutes more and is less efficient, an overheating of the engine would cause major breakdowns, that is why the main function of the cooling system is to allow the engine to warm up as soon as possible and then to work at a constant temperature.

Here below, we detail some sections of the system and its functions:

RADIATOR

Made up of many small-diameter finned tubes, it acts as a heat exchanger between the hot water from the engine and the ambient air blown by the fan.

COOLER

It acts as a radiator, it cools the oil to achieve a suitable temperature and viscosity, ensuring good lubrication of the parts.

INTERCOOLER

Main in turbocharged engines, it reduces the temperature of the air in the intake, thus avoiding drops in engine performance.

THERMOSTAT

It acts as a valve for the coolant, it is in charge of opening and closing its passage to the radiator, thus allowing an optimal and constant operating temperature.

WATER PUMP

Its function is to maintain a constant flow of refrigerant within the circuit, it is one of the main components that cause leaks and major breakdowns in the cooling system.

FAN

Ensures forced air circulation through the engine radiator, in public works machinery there are different types depending on their drive:

  • BELT DRIVEN FAN

this type of fan is always running regardless of coolant temperature and its speed depends on engine speed

  • FAN WITH CLUTCH

The engine control unit manages the speed of the fan, engaging and disengaging the clutch according to the signal from the various engine temperature sensors.

  • FAN DRIVEN BY HYDRAULIC MOTOR

This fan varies its speed according to the temperature of the coolant and other systems, it is the most precise and efficient of all those mentioned above.

EXPANSION TANKS

It absorbs variations in the volume of the refrigerant due to changes in temperature and maintains the system pressure within pre-established limits.

TENSIONERS AND BELTS

The main functions of belt tensioners are to maintain proper tension, dampen system vibrations, and guide the drive belt. At Blumaq we have ribbed, trapezoidal or toothed belts, and tensioners with the exact design, measurements and specifications of the OEM manufacturer.

REFRIGERANTS

The coolant is a compound of deionized water, additives and ethylene glycol, the latter has the ability to regulate the temperature, depending on the place where you work you must take into account the temperature ranges of the coolant to be used, which range from -40ºC to 140ºC, there are 2 types of coolants:

  • ORGANIC

It does not use silicates and is therefore more durable, since this compound causes it to degrade earlier, instead it uses protection additives that also reach a higher freezing temperature.

  • INORGANIC

They last less than organic due to the use of silicates and are more harmful to the environment.

It is important that the cooling system only uses liquid coolant, otherwise the useful life of the engine components will be shortened and we could have the following problems:

  • Cavitation in the system.
  • Corrosion of cooling system components.
  • Increased system temperature.
  • Shorter useful life of the diesel engine.

TEMPERATURE INDICATORS

Recognition of these symbols by the operator allows the maintenance team to take action before these failures become major repairs. In this way we warn that they are informative indicators that give us information on the state of the refrigeration system, indicating through visual or sound alerts, its malfunction.

Blumaq has the most complete line of products for maintenance and repair of the cooling system of your machine, Our products are manufactured under the strictest quality controls, adjusted to the specifications of the OEM manufacturer.

A hydraulic pump is an element capable of transforming mechanical or electrical energy into hydraulic energy and, in turn, into movement of implements, the flow generated by the pump and the pressure of the system will determine the speed and power of these.

The hydraulic pumps could be;

  • Fixed flow: the flow rate only varies by increasing the speed of the pump.
  • Variable flow: the flow is independent of the speed of the pump, it is determined by the need of the system.

Basic maintenance for hydraulic pumps

It is advisable to periodically check or inspect the hydraulic system of your machine and, especially, the pumps to avoid costly breakdowns, pay attention to the following tasks regularly:

  • Pay attention to its correct operation
  • Visually inspect possible leaks and condition of its components
  • Check pressures periodically
  • Analyze the level of vibrations emitted by the machine
  • Change hydraulic oil and filters after service hours listed

Anyway, the best thing to do in order to extend the useful life of the hydraulic pumps as much as possible, is to have professionals specialized in the maintenance of your machine, at Blumaq we have a workshop service where we repair and restore your machine in record time, helped by expert in mechanics.
